The story of how Boris Yeltsin presided over the criminalization of Russia, why Putin was chosen as his successor, and how Putin has suppressed all opposition while retaining the appearance of a pluralist state. As Putin consolidated dictatorial power, he faced weak opposition by Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister; but Nemtsov was murdered at a location under around-the-clock surveillance by Mr. Putin’s personal guard. Problem solved.
