An outstanding study of the American pacification policy and the progress of the Viet Cong National Liberation Front. It gives the reader an understanding of Vietnamese politics in the light of such environmental factors as the traditional peasant society, French colonial rule, and modernization. There are numerous references to intelligence and covert operations, including the covert bombing of Laos in 1964, the counterinsurgency program, the impact of intelligence estimates, and the Phoenix program, which centralized certain counterespionage and counterterror operations.
